One of six short plays in the Raven about Poe collection. Published in 1845, this short story was taken as a factual account and was only later revealed as a hoax by Poe. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, Ernest seeks his physician friend who is fascinated by magnetism (later developed into what we now know as hypnosis). The physician had always wondered what would happen if someone was mesmerised at the point of death. Ernest volunteers and it seems, as the play progresses, that the physician is able to speak to Ernest in the afterlife.
